The Process

Many people are taking the opportunity to talk to someone independent about the difficulties or challenges they face.  Talking to an experienced professional can help you to find new strategies, resources and solutions.

Counselling and coaching is short term focused work.  Usually we will meet for one session each week lasting for one hour.  If you are arranging private counselling you choose how many sessions you want, and the frequency.  If your employer or insurance is supporting the counselling the sessions are usually limited.  If you feel on-going counselling is more appropriate you will be supported in exploring alternative options.  To get the most out of counselling it helps if you know what to expect and how you will be participating in the process.

What to expect

You have a right to equal consideration and treatment, regardless of your sex, race, religion, economic status, age, sexual preference or belief.  I value working with people from many different backgrounds, situations and circumstances.

Confidentiality

You have a right to confidentiality as described by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling.  There are some exceptions which include:

  • If you disclose that you intend to hurt yourself or another person, or commit a criminal act.
  • The court has made a legal order for the release of records (a subpoena).
  • You give a signed release specifying to whom the information is to be released.

If your employer or insurance company have arranged for the counselling they will received confirmation that you have attended your sessions and that the counselling is appropriate for you.  The content of the session is not usually available although a limited summary or report may be required.  This will be discussed with you at the time of your first appointment.  To ensure the highest standards are maintained, your employer or insurer may ask you for feedback on your counselling or coaching experience.

How you will be participating

Counselling and coaching is a process, and it can only be helpful if you can be:

  • be honest, open and willing to share your concerns
  • ask questions when you don’t understand or when you need clarification
  • discuss any reservations you may have
  • keep your appointments

If you need to cancel or change an appointment please contact me.  If you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment and your employer or insurer is supporting your counselling, you may lose your session.

My role as a counsellor and coach is to understand the difficulties or challenges that you want to overcome, and to assist in finding solutions.  To get the most out of the session it is helpful if you focus on what is important to you.
